This spiral-shaped bacterium is a member of the order Spirochaetales, which also includes the Spirochetes. These microbes have an unusual means of moving around. They swim by twisting back and forth, propelling themselves like a corkscrew being turned into the cork of a bottle of wine.

L. interrogans is harmful to humans. Harmful microbes that cause diseases are called pathogens.
